We went down to the allotment nice and early, because the drinkers clearly weren’t going to thaw without intervention. Much antifreeze was needed simply to unlock the gate!
The new bantams were fine, although they still form a little group of three, and haven’t fully integrated. But, thank goodness, there was no sign of bullying.

I’m a bit behind with this blog post, since the National was held on 16th and 17th November 2013. We’d thoroughly enjoyed the show in previous years, and so it’s a fixture on our calendar. We went on the Saturday. Unlike 2012, though, when it was crowded almost from the moment the doors opened, this show was nothing like as well-attended. But (to our untutored eyes at least) the standard of the birds was absolutely superb.
So this blog entry is going to be a picture-fest of chickens. Be warned!
These colourful “gate guardians” were on sale at one of the trade stands.
We had a lot of trouble trying to introduce the chickens to a treadle feeder. The one that we first bought was a cheapy – around £40. The idea of a treadle feeder is that it keeps the food clean and dry, and doesn’t present a temptation to vermin, while still making the food instantly available to the chickens.
