Rhyno Motor Mover – look, no hands!

As we’re getting more used to the caravan, we’ve come to realise that it’s a bit too heavy for us to shift by hand. Although we’ve got a nice flat pitch at our secure storage site, there’s a little slope up to the path which is just too much for us to manage.

After our visit to Woodbridge, we spent the afternoon at Sutton Hoo.

Woodbridge

Woodbridge is home to Britain’s Best Bakery (from a recent TV series), but as we found out, also a contender for Britain’s worst coffee.

We chose a walk from the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty guide.

It started out by taking us past the marina and boatyards. It wasn’t foggy, as the pictures may suggest, but a day when sand from the Sahara blew across East Anglia!

We went to Hollesley in Suffolk

… and stayed at Run Cottage Touring Park, which is a lovely peaceful place to stay. Here’s the view from our caravan window:

The Caravan and Camping Show 2014

Well, when you go in for a new hobby or activity, you’ve got to buy the magazines, join the forums, and attend the shows. Am I right?

We were a wee bit disappointed by the Motorhome and Caravan Show at the end of last year. We shouldn’t have been – the clue was indeed in the title. But too many motorhomes for our taste.

This one was different. The word “caravan” comes first in The Caravan and Camping Show. Besides, we still have our tent, so camping is still in our blood.

It’s a bit snide, but I couldn’t resist this, set up as a sort of gate guardian at the entrance to the show:

So that’s what it’s really about, is it? Envy, eh? My cushions are posher than yours. Come on, we’re talking about camping holidays here!

Bigfoot and Floë

We’ve had a play with our new toy, and enjoyed it very much, but one thing that we quickly realised that we needed was some sort of motorised assistance with getting it in and out of its parking slot.

The Caravan Show

Well, it had to be done. We went to the Caravan Show, more properly the Motorhome and Caravan Show at the NEC. I must say, I do enjoy this sort of thing. Motorbike show, boat show, poultry show, country and shooting show, and recently the baking show, we normally do two or three a year.

First Caravan Outing

We finally got around to taking the caravan on its first modest outing. The idea was to find somewhere close by that would offer nice walks and where we could practise setting up and taking down the caravan. Well, we found it, and with only one or two misadventures, it was a great success. Seasoned caravanners would of course be amused at our amateur mistakes!

We chose Gosfield Lake, near Braintree. Essex may not be everyone’s idea of a holiday destination, but it has pretty countryside beloved of John Betjeman, plenty of pubs, and decent roads for the novice caravanner!

In high season, Gosfield Lake is a water ski centre.

All mod cons in our little play-house

We can’t help laughing just a little at our new toy, and at ourselves. It’s like a child’s Wendy house, full of little gadgets to play with. We went over to explore it a bit more, and to find out where the electrical panel is, and to try out the gas fitting.

We were a bit put out that we’ve discovered that we’ll need to shop for a few more bits and pieces, even though when we asked the dealer whether there were any other things we needed he said no. Today we’ve discovered that although the package included fresh and waste water carriers, we have no fresh water pump nor waste water hose.

But we do love the way the caravan is fitted out. It has a full size gas stove, with an oven and grill as well as a four burner hob.

I wish I lived in a caravan …

I wish I lived in a caravan, With a horse to drive, like a peddler-man! Where he comes from nobody knows, Or where he goes to, but on he goes! (Robert Louis Stevenson)

Our wish has come true, and we have our caravan. We picked it up earlier today, and towed it with some trepidation to a secure park not too far away from where we live.

Caravan 002a

It was mostly motorway miles, for which we set the cruise control to a modest 55mph, so it could hardly have been easier. But we felt absurdly proud to have made it to our destination. The only real embarrassment was that I couldn’t release the caravan from the towbar, and had to ask for help. Luckily a couple of good Samaritans came to our aid and offered all sorts of good advice, including the name and number of a recommended service engineer. He’s booked to give the caravan the once over next Monday, before we use it in anger.
