Sun 25 July: Port Colborne ON to Ashtabula OH

We said our farewells to Canada today as we rode first eastwards to cross the bridge into Buffalo, then westwards along the southern shore of Lake Erie. After clearing the industrial fringe of Buffalo as quickly as possible on the interstate, an experience made even more depressing by steady rain, we joined New York State 5, which is the Seaway Trail, and a “scenic byway”. And the sun came out. Here’s a view from Erie State Park:

Sat 24 July: Local to Niagara Falls

Today was our scheduled sightseeing day at Niagara Falls. Well, it just had to be done. We started with a visit to Port Power Sports, who, in spite of a busy Saturday schedule, fixed Jean’s mirror at no charge. They’re lovely people, and have a great range of Yamaha and Victory bikes as well as ATVs etc.

Fri 23 July: Parry Sound ON to Port Colborne ON

I suppose that I’d better start with an admission. We had a little bit of an off today. First time in three years. We set off in steady rain this morning, intending to stop at the first fuel station, since we’d already used half a tankful on our final leg the previous day.

Thu 22 July: Blind River ON to Parry Sound ON

We rode around a big piece of Lake Huron today, including Georgian Bay. We haven’t seen much of the Great Lake itself, though. The road has been in the main inland, through rocky lakes and forests, interspersed with farmland. This picture of Ink Lake gives an idea:

Wed 21 July: Wawa ON to Blind River ON

We finished the Lake Superior part of the ride today, rather to our regret. What a superb road! We rode southwards from Wawa, stopping for a few final photos at Old Woman Bay:

Shortly after we set off from Terrace Bay, we stopped at a lookout point near Marathon.

Tue 20 July: Terrace Bay ON to Wawa ON

Quite a short journey today, since the next 100 miles is through a national park and has no hotels. So we were faced with the choice of a short ride or rather a long one. It was a good choice, since the weather was less kind.

Mon 19 July: Grand Marais MN to Terrace Bay ON

This is what we came for! Riding along the shore of Lake Superior, with the sun shining, and a cool breeze to make the riding conditions just about perfect!

Sun 18 July: Ashland WI to Grand Marais MN

We’re following the shoreline of Lake Superior. We travelled from Ashland along the south shore to Duluth. At least we attempted to – yet another road closure frustrated our attempt to visit picturesque Bayfield. Continue reading

Saturday’s Pictures

While we’re waiting for the rain to clear, with the promise of a fine day ahead, I thought I’d post a few of the pictures from yesterday. Forest roads are nicer to ride through than to photograph, but this gives an idea of the Ottawa forest, taken at an intersection with a county road:
